STAYING CURIOUS
I have always been a lover of learning and a generally curious person. (Inquiring minds want to know!) More recently, I’ve come to understand the psychological and physical benefits of lifelong learning. Humans are actually designed to learn new things and create new neural pathways in the brain as we age. Our capacity to learn and grow does not have to decrease as our years advance.
Learning new things boosts the brain’s plasticity and efficiency and helps boost memory and cognitive function. New research shows that staying active and keeping the brain engaged may even stave off ailments and diseases including Alzheimers and dementia. Scientists now understand that exercising and maintaining the brain is as important to aging well as maintaining muscle strength and stability.
“Always walk through life as if you have something new to learn, and you will.”
~ Vernon Howard
Although stretching our minds and expanding our experiences may sometimes be a bit uncomfortable, it is also likely to feel challenging and adventurous, and ultimately, to feel very rewarding. In addition, lifelong learning offers an opportunity for increased social engagement and physical activity which contribute to increased feelings of happiness and wellbeing.
What I know for sure is that the desire and drive to learn fuels itself. The more curious and engaged we are, the more curious we become. Perhaps today is the day to explore, inquire or learn something new.
